I’ve been quite a book worm these past few weeks and have been using (or abusing) my local library’s impressive art and design section to feed my passions, gain inspiration and get away from the computer screen every once in a while.

Here’s a few recommendations:
Basic visual design (1963) by Maurice de Sausmarez.

An introduction to the visual arts by the late artist and teacher. I found this to be great reminder of some of the techniques and practices every designer ought to be considering daily. The book looks into colour theory, spacial forces and balance, proportion and more, with some great examples to accompany the text.
De Sausmarez explores a variety of mediums that I rarely find myself around in my daily working life, so it was quite refreshing in that respect.

Deconstruction (1989) by Andreas Papadakis, Catherine Cooke and Andrew Benjamin.

With its roots in post-modern architecture, this book explores the deconstructivism movement and its influence in the art world. This comprehensive book explains its origins and explores the theory and philosophy… Which I won’t pretend to fully comprehend! Nevertheless a fascinating and inspiring read.

Decorative Arts – 60s (2006) by Charlotte Fiell, Peter Fiell.

I’ve often felt I was born in the wrong decade so it was no surprise to find myself drawn to this book.
A fully illustrated reference manual that includes everything from iconic chair designs and sleek chrome kettles, to dainty glassware and textiles.
A perfect book for lovers of this colourful era, people interesting in product/interior design or those simply looking for another, possibly less-trodden, path of inspiration.

AGI: Graphic Design since 1950 (2007) by Ben Bos, Elly Bos.

The AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale) is a group of the world’s leading graphic artists and designers formed in 1952. This book is an overview of its members and their works, and with members like Paul Rand, Saul Bass and Michael Bierut there’s some impressive stuff. With one page dedicated to each designer, and plenty of additional information, this 800 page tome is wonderful resource of information and inspiration.
